Hangman with a Twist

The best way to describe this game is Hangman meets Wheel of Fortune. It's a fun way to review vocabulary and grammatical structures that you've been working on in class.

The game is most fun if you have time to play at least 2 rounds and can give a small prize to the winning team.

Materials Needed: A box about 6 x 6 x 6 – a size that is easy to toss and will bounce around on the floor. Put point values on each side: 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, and Wild. You're basically make a giant dice.

Procedure:

  1. Divide the class into 4 or 5 groups.
  2. As with Hangman, draw blank spaces on the board to represent the letters and words of a sentence.
  3. For the first round, Wild = 1000 points.
  4. The first group tosses the box and guesses a letter. Let's say they roll the box and it lands on 300. They choose "B," and there are 3 B's in the sentence. Fill in all the letter B's on the board, and the group gets 300 points for each "B". They now have 900 points.
  5. Play continues; each group rolls the box and guesses a letter, receiving points for the letters they guess correctly. When a group thinks they know the answer (and it's their turn), they get one chance to guess the sentence. If they get it wrong, the next group goes. If they get it right, time for round 2!
  6. Round 2: Wild = Bankrupt. Play continues with a new sentence. This time, if a group rolls Wild, they lose all their points and lose their turn. Be prepared for a lot of yelling and cheering when a group goes bankrupt!
  7. If your class is up for Round 3, Wild = 1000 points again. Round 4, Wild = Bankrupt, etc.

I learned about this game from fellow students at Cal Poly Pomona.
